The problem of the „other mind” from the point of view of ecological psycholgy in the tradition of James J. Gibson

This paper focuses on a basic epistemological question of philosphy commonly referred as „the problem of other minds”. Theory of Mind (ToM) accounts are discussed as a highly popular and influental attempt of contemporary cognitive psychology to give a solution to this problem. My analysis deploys relevant theorethical and empirical arguments against the neccesity of the concept of Theory of Mind and its validity, and examines the ecological approach based on the work of James J. Gibson as a viable alternative. I endorse the current trend to extend the ecological framework to interpersonal situations, and argue that a grand contribution of this approach to the field of social psychology could be the proof that the minds of others can be percieved directly. The study questions the validity of the concept and the measures of Theory of Mind approaches and comes to the conclusion that the ecological approach not only provides a good basis for criticism, but it can also give viable answers to the questions emerging from the examination of „the problem of other minds”.

Key words: the problem of other minds, Gibsonian ecological psychology, theory of mind, direct perception, social affordance

« Vissza a tartalomjegyzékhez

Kapornaky Mihály SZTE BTK Pszichológiai Intézet Elméleti dolgozatom kiindulópontja egy alapvetően episztemológiai természetű filozófiai kérdés, melyre a „másik elme problémaként” szokás hivatkozni.
