Excessive social media use has been associated with depressive and somatic symptoms among others. The mediating role of maladaptive emotion regulation (such as rumination) has been highlighted in several studies. The aim of the present study is to explore the relationship between problematic social media use and depressive symptoms and physical complaints among Hungarian adolescents, with a particular focus on the role of gender difference and ruminative response style. Method: The analysis was based on data from the first wave of the Budapest Longitudinal Study. The data were collected from a representative sample of 5th grade students in primary schools in Budapest, predominantly aged 10-11 (M = 10,74; SD = 0,54), in the 2018/2019 school year. The net sample consisted of 2126 students: 48,8% (N = 1030) boys, 51,2% (N = 1079) girls. Participants completed a self-completion questionnaire, which included measures of problematic social media use, depression, physical symptoms and rumination, in school setting. Gender differences were assessed using Mann-Whitney test and Chi-square test, and the relationship between these constructs was assessed using a mediation analysis. Results: Problematic social media use was significantly more severe in girls than in boys, and showed a significant correlation with both depression and physical symptoms, significantly mediated by rumination. Conclusion: Girls may be at higher risk for symptoms of problematic social media use. The ruminative response style used by problematic users may increase the risk of depression and physical symptoms.

Keywords: problematic social media use, depression, somatic symptoms, rumination

« Vissza a tartalomjegyzékhez

Szabó Barbara1*, Koncz Patrik1,2, Király Orsolya1, Koronczai Beatrix1, Paksi Borbála3, Demetrovics Zsolt1,41ELTE Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem, Pszichológiai Intézet 2ELTE Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem, Pszichológiai Doktori Iskola 3ELTE Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem, Neveléstudományi Intézet 4University of Gibraltar, Centre of Excellence in Responsible Gaming *szb.barbra@gmail.com Háttér és célok: A problémás közösségimédia-használat és a fizikai, valamint a mentális egészség között számos […]
