The gender of mental illnesses<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our research aimed to study the impact of gender stereotypes on the stigmatization of the mentally ill. There are two main previous approaches to this topic. The first assumes an interaction effect between gender and mental illness, thus creating typical and atypical pairings. According to the second theory, patients with diseases perceived as masculine receive greater stigmatization. Our research tested both approaches, as well as the presumed differences in prejudice between male and female respondents. We conducted an online experiment by manipulating a short story (vignette) about a mentally ill person (by the variation of the gender and the illness variables). This way every participant was cast into one of four groups (experimental conditions). We asked the respondents (n=501) to answer questions about the person in the story, which were used to measure stigmatization (social distancing, attributions). The results indicate that the perceived masculinity of the disease has a primary effect on the stigmatization of mental patients, while the combination of the disease and gender stereotypes did not show such a strong effect. However, men were more inclined to have negative prejudices towards patients living with a typical pairing only in variable negative attributions). Consequently, the first model (interaction between mental illness and gender) cannot be completely rejected either. A possible explanation for this phenomenon is the different levels of perceived responsibility in the development of mental disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
